Frequently asked questions

HOW DOES IT WORK?

TCHM is a membership-based, nonprofit ministry through which hundreds of thousands of Christians voluntarily share to pay each other’s medical bills. Choose from one of three programs—Gold, Silver, or Bronze—and add the optional Brother’s Keeper program to protect against catastrophic medical bills. Members who incur medical costs eligible according to our Guidelines submit their bills to CHM along with a few simple forms. Bills are then shared or reimbursed—usually by way of a check in the mail. What is health cost sharing? It's a way to satisy your healthcare cost and help thers while upholding your Christian beliefs and sticking to your budget. Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM), the nation’s first and longest-serving health cost sharing ministry, provides an affordable, accountable and faith-based framework to help fellow believers facing a health crisis. Likewise, brothers and sisters in Christ step in to help you in your time of need. Members’ pre-set monthly financial gifts to CHM are the funds used to share each other’s healthcare costs. The ministry shares 100 percent of eligible bills and overall has shared $4.5 billion in members’ healthcare costs. CHM is also a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity CHM is a federally certified exemption to the individual mandate under the U.S. Affordable Care Act. As such, CHM is an eligible option for individuals and families under the national healthcare law.

They must be single. They must be your legal dependents (i.e. they must be reported as dependents on your income tax forms).

CHM GUIDELINES

To act in fairness to all members, each medical bill submitted to CHM for sharing is authorized according to the Guidelines. Click the button below to read and download the guidelines.

UNDERSTANDING UNITS?

Christian Healthcare Ministries uses a unit system. A unit is a participating individual within a membership. A single person is one unit, a married couple is two units (any two individuals must be two units), and a family is three units, regardless of the number of dependent children. Different units may participate in different programs (Gold, Silver, or Bronze). Single-parent households: If you are legally and financially responsible for a child or children, your membership will be two units (the parent is the first unit and all children are the second unit). Households with one participating spouse: If one spouse is a CHM member and the other spouse chooses not to be a member, the participating spouse is one CHM unit and all dependent children are an additional unit (a total of two units). Adopted children: When a CHM member adopts a child or otherwise has obtained legal custody with legal responsibility for a child’s medical care, that child can be included in your CHM membership. If any other source is responsible, willing or available to pay the child’s medical bills, these resources must be exhausted before CHM members can share bills. CHM cannot share bills for adoption expenses or for any medical expenses incurred before you become legally and financially responsible for the child, nor can we share any birth expenses for an adopted child.

WHAT IS COST SHARING?

Health cost-sharing is a way to satisfy your healthcare costs and help others while upholding your Christian beliefs and sticking to your budget.

BROTHERS KEEPER

CHM's catastrophic bills program Brother’s Keeper is your safeguard against catastrophic illness or injury. Brother’s Keeper is a low-cost, Bible-inspired program enabling CHM members to meet medical bills that exceed the $125,000 limit per illness specified in the CHM Guidelines. Gold level members: Signing up for Brother’s Keeper provides unlimited cost support per illness (diagnosis). Silver and Bronze members: Signing up for Brother’s Keeper provides an additional $100,000 of cost support. With each annual Brother’s Keeper renewal, participants receive an additional $100,000 of assistance, up to $1 million per illness. For medical needs exceeding $125,000, Brother’s Keeper members send a quarterly designated gift amount (average* amount: $45 per membership unit; see our cost calculator) to the CHM office, where it is deposited in an audited escrow account. There is also a $40 annual, nonrefundable fee per membership. Members receive a quarterly Brother’s Keeper letter stating their quarterly gift amount and the name of a fellow Brother’s Keeper member who has medical bills. They are asked to send cards and letters of encouragement to these fellow Christians. *Please note: Brother’s Keeper operates differently than the Gold, Silver or Bronze programs. Quarterly amounts are calculated by taking the total dollar amount of medical bills eligible for Brother’s Keeper sharing and dividing by the number of Brother’s Keeper participants. This is why CHM recommends budgeting an average amount of $45 per membership unit, per quarter.
